Superbowl Sunday Sewing

I had lots of time to sew Sunday afternoon before the game! So I finally got to make some of these green re-usable Swiffer Covers. I found this project posted at CraftGossip.com from Amber at Berlin's Whimsy a few weeks ago, and have been waiting for some free sewing time to whip some of them up.

I followed Amber's tutorial for my first sweeper cover, she uses two layers of toweling to make the cover reversible and a button closure to keep it on the sweeper. It looked great - this is an easy tutorial and the pattern was perfect! Oh, but then I got some ideas of my own!

I decided to use one layer of toweling backed with a cotton print instead of two layers. And since I was using bright prints, I sewed a little bit to show on the top of the cover. I also rounded off the edges a bit (I used a salad plate and traced the curve on the end of the pattern). I used hook and loop tape to secure the cover, and for the final touch added the buttons on last for decoration.

Now I have 5 new brightly colored sweeper covers!

Oh, and I also put the finishing touches on a super-cute apron gift for my girlfriend who just moved into a new home. This is Butterick 6567, one of my favorite patterns because they are all reproductions of vintage styles. This apron looks like a pretty little reversible scalloped skirt.

My freind absolutely loved it!

I have my next project picked out, it is something to wear, and I am wildly enthusiastic about it! Which says a lot, because the last two things I sewed to wear looked, well, simply awful. And that was about a year ago. Now I just have to find time during my busy week to start on my new project...I can't wait!

Recently we moved into a new home with wood laminate flooring, and I discovered that cleaning options were limited. No more floor steamer or mop. The Swiffer worked best, but didn't do a great job. After much research and pondering, I decided to try an Internet recommendation of microfiber rags with a spritz bottle full of a water/alcohol mixture. (I use household alcohol of 70% strength found by the peroxide and witch hazel.) It WORKS!!! No more gummy buildup. My wood laminate floors dry instantly. And they SHINE! I bought a 30 count bag of microfiber rags for $9.00 at Home Depot and have been searching for a way to fit them better on the Swiffer. This pattern is AWESOME, and I can even reverse the rags as usual by sewing two microfiber rags together!!!! I can't wait!!!!

my brain is not working correctly, but how do you go about getting the little fabric flaps on the top so you can see them?

Hi Loretta, I just added the fabric print to the part of the flaps that would end up being on the top of the Swiffer cover. You can kind of see in the third photograph the way it looks when the Swiffer covers are open and laying flat, outside of the covers up.

Would you mind posting a few pics of the entire cover, front and back i would like to see how you did it with the two fabrics. The other pattern is basic cut and dry of the double terry cloth, sew together, flip, top stitch.

Hello there "Anonymous", the other side of the sweeper covers not pictured in the post are printed cotton fabrics. Where Amber's covers in her tutorial are terrycloth on both sides, I added printed cotton to one side as well as the little tabs of the printed fabric on the terrycloth side of my covers. This was just a fun alteration of Amber's awesome tutorial that I shared to get you inspired to try making some and experimenting with the pattern your own way. Actually, I am STILL using the same sweeper covers I made in this post and it is four years later - they really last a long time! Thanks for visiting me at my blog ~ Erika

I didn't understand. The solution that you made. Household alcohol 70%. I am confused about the comment about the peroxide and witch hazel. Could you clarify? I will also try to research but In case I can't locate the website. Txs!
