Meet My Machine! Blog Hop

Welcome to the last day of the MEET MY MACHINE blog hop!

Sew at Home Mummy

This blog hop is a great way to get a peek at what other stitchers are sewing with and read about what they love (or don't love) about their machines. This is my sewing machine story, and you can find links to visit all the other blogs in the hop right here.

AND THERE ARE PRIZES!!! Scroll all the way down to find how to enter a giveaway for a prize of goodies from me AND BERNINA!

Great, let's start at the beginning!

MY BERNINA STORY
So once upon a time when I was studying for my Fine Arts degree (a long, long time ago boys and girls), I was experimenting with sending all kinds of materials through my sewing machine, from delicate papers and lightweight plastics to heavy canvas and thick gauge vinyls. My poor little sewing machine (brand name being withheld to protect the innocent) could not keep up - half the time it was chewing up the delicate stuff, and the other half of the time it was choking on thicker materials and puking up giant thread-balls. Sometimes when I sewed for hours at a time the machine would get hot and just stop working! That's when I turned to BERNINA.

My first ever BERNINA, the 1080. The "sexy lady" is not original.

What this BERNINA allowed me to do was to focus completely on my creativity; it could sew through almost anything I threw at it without skipping a beat or a perfectly placed stitch. That's Swiss engineering! And you know what? After stitching up my artwork with the little 1080, I was able to graduate with my Fiber Arts degree and win a major award for my work!

On the front page of the SIU Egyptian in 1997, I look like I'm 15 years old!

*A little caveat - I also collect and sew with vintage machines, and I own something like 20ish sewing machines at the moment. You can see some of my vintage collection by clicking on any of the links in the "Sewing Machine Collection" section over in the sidebar. Although I do enjoy mixing it up and sewing vintage time to time, if I'm sewing something that counts or if I'm quilting, I always sew with my BERNINA.

I have sewn with several BERNINA machines since first purchasing my1080 (like the 440QE, and 350PE), and I am currently sewing with a 580.

I call this machine "The BOSS". No, not in a Springsteen kind of way, but in a kicking butt and taking names kid of way.

I've sewn with this machine for about a year now - and right away I was in love with how incredibly bright the on board sewing light is in this baby. Other favorite features are the high-res touchscreen, where everything you ever wanted to know and more is displayed:

Go ahead, touch me!

and the conveniently located thread cutter (the little scissors right next to the start/stop button and reverse button).

I'll cut you!

It sews beautifully, and since I started quilting I've been using this baby to do lots of quilting tasks from piecing to free-motion stitching and actual quilting. So, yes, my favorite accessories at the moment are all quilting related - the 1/4" Patchwork foot # 37, the Walking Foot #50, and the BERNINA Stitch Regulator.

Oh, BSR, you are so DREAMY!

What I love the most about the 580 is what I loved about my very first BERNINA; it is incredibly reliable, giving me the perfect results I expect no matter what I'm stitching. So, I can concentrate on my creativity instead of worrying about if my machine will keep up with me!

You may ask, if I was granted a magic wish and could have any one sewing machine in the world, what would it be? Probably the BERNINA 750 QE. Have you SEEN the hugemongus bobbin on the new 7 Series machines? It is AWESOME! I had a chance to sew on a 750 QE, and it is a truly amazing machine - incredibly fast and quiet. Yes, it is definitely my dream machine!

Now that you know about my machine, want to see where I sew? Here's a tour of my funky basement sewing space:

This space is definitely not perfect, there are lots of doors, posts, and open spaces to work around. The one long, uninterrupted wall is home to my mangle iron, cutting/storage table, and bookshelves.

I am big on books for reference, and since I started quilting a few years ago my quilting book collection has been growing. I don't quite have enough book space in this room because of the lack of solid wall space.

My main sewing desk is at the back corner of the room, this is where I do most of my stitching on the BERNINA 580.

A view in the other direction, two other vintage machines set up to sew, my ironing board set up in front of the industrial machine at the moment.

A small table and chairs at the other end of the room provide work space, but sometimes gets filled up pretty quickly with junk as I'm working.

So naturally, if I could change anything about the space it would be to have a bit more of everything. A bit more space, definitely more wall area for storage, and more windows for natural lighting.

But at least I do have a dedicated space to sew in, and for that I'm grateful!

Now, are you ready for a GIVEAWAY! Yes!

The prize is a goody bag from both BERNINA and me, and includes some awesome BERNINA branded stuff for your sewing room (acrylic cup, mini-ruler, neoprene laptop sleeve, and pretty fabric roll) plus a Moda boho 2" charm pack, a Free Spirit Essentials 6" charm pack, a pack of vintage craft buttons, your very own Miss Sews-it-all "Stitch or Die" needlebook, and felt tag. All of these goodies will arrive in a super sturdy white and red BERNINA canvas bag!

CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED! THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED.

I have a Bernina 440QE that I love. I am so envious of your sewing basement. I'm scattered all over the place, but we plan to add onto the house & I'll get my own sewing space. Thanks for sharing & thanks for the chance to win.
I am currently sewing on 3 older Pfaff machines most of the time. I had a Bernina 830 for 20 years and loved it. I also have Babylock machines. I'm like you, I have quite a collection of machines.

I sew on a Bernina Virtuosa 160 which I have loved. But as of yesterday my dream machine is the same as yours! I'm so fickle!

Oh, I would love to win this fun bundle! I have a 1 year old Bernina 350PE!!! I love owning it...and I hope that in 10 years I can say the same thing. =)

Love your story and what an amazing space! Lucky you. Thank you for linking and sharing today...and thank you Bernina for a little treat. =)

Thanks for sharing your story. I sew with Elna which is also in the basement of our home.

Oh crafters and their collections! I only have two machines right now. I "splurged" on a Bernina 440QE which is my stay-at-home machine, and I also have a little Janome that I take with me to classes and retreats. I'd love a 7 series but its not in the budget these days. I'm lucky to have a dedicated craft room, but my machine shares its home with scrapbooking tools and paints. Thanks for sharing!

I sew with a Pfaff Creative Vision, I have heard of, but have never seen a Bernina...will have to find a dealer and test drive one to see how those work with a stitch regulator!! I have own a Husqvarna Viking Sapphire just prior to my CV but then decided I wanted to be able to embroider as well and traded it in. Love your sewing area!!

I'm sewing with a Janome DC2011. It's ok. Was a nice upgrade from my 20 year old singer from high school. I recently borrowed a friends 1090qe Bernina. I'm so in love with this machine. Already called a dealer. Saving my money.
My husband surprised me with a Bernina 780 for Christmas. I kept my 440 for classes. Bernina has been a good machine for me - I don't have a single complaint!

Love your sewing space - it's so large!
I sew with a vintage Singer 301. It only does a straight stich but it sews through anything!

I'm a Bernina Girl, too! I have a 1230 that I have loved since the moment I got her; my most researched & considered purchase in my life. We have been together for more than 20 years now. But I'm like you with a love of old machines. My faves are my Featherweights & my 'new' White machine. I love your space! And you are so cute in that newspaper clipping!

I mainly sew with my Viking #1. It was a top of the line machine when I purchased it. To this day, I still love sewing with it.

I sew on a Bernina 440QE and also have a Singer Featherweight that I use when I sew outside on the picnic table!

Currently working off my Bernina 170. But my 930 stays set up and I go thru spells when it's the favorite kid to work on!
NRGrim said…
What machine I use depends on what I am sewing. I have both the BERNINA 440QE and the 830LE and LOVE them both to pieces! I often multi-sew and have the 830 working on some embroidery while sewing on my 440. I just recently passed my first machine (an old Singer) onto a young girl interested in sewing...it may be an old machine, but it still sews a straight stitch and zig-zag...and I can teach her how to work with the basics so she can appreciate a nice machine when she gets one! Time to go create! Hugs to all! :-)
Donna said…
I sew most of the time with my wonderful Ruby - a 830LE. My travel machine is a 450. Love them both! They still take anything you can throw at them and just steam straight ahead to the finish! I love my Berninas!!!

I have used a lot of machines but my babylock beat them all my hubby bought it for me just before he died he told me to sew alot so i wouldn't miss him too much well I sew a lot but I still miss him. I have made a lot of quilts and have sewn all gowns for my daughters wedding and my babylock has done it all.

I sew with a Singer 15-91 made in 1936. Having little experience with a fancy machine, I know I am missing out. I like your prize give away and hope I win to add to my stash of supplies to use. Just might need to try out a new Bernina. They sure have a lot of nice features.

I am currently sewing with a Bernina 230PE and I love it. But, I am eagerly awaiting for my Bernina 750 to arrive....4 year interest free financing was the catch!! I can't wait to see what magical powers it has!
Unknown said…
I sew mostly with my Bernina 830. Love it! I also have a 640 and a serger. Would love to have a room like yours to have all my stuff set up and ready to sew. Right now I use my dining room. But I can dream! I have so much to learn and am terrified I will break something, but I keep at it and I keep my dealers number close at hand.

Loved the tour of your sewing area. It's always fun to see how others set up their space. What do I sew with?
My primary machine is my Bernina 440QE, named "Elizabeth", and I am just now bonding with my new/old candy apple red 1936 Singer Featherweight, named "Lucy". She's positively dreamy and sews nicely, too.
Unknown said…
Since 1974 I've sewn on nothing but Berninas. I've purchased and returned or resold several other brands because, as they say, Nothing Sews Like a Bernina!

I have been sewing for years..My original machine is a Pfaff (Old and heavy) I also have a Singer Futura that is having trouble with the tension (ready for the sewing machine hospital) and my daughter bought me a Singer 4423 for mothers day last year. It sews great and I can do FMQ on it but is not a very heavy duty machine..Would love to have a Bernina sometime in the future but alas I am retired and single and can't afford a better machine. Would love the goodies you are giving away. I love to quilt and have only been doing it for a couple of years.

Cute giveaway :) I have a mechanical White and a lovely smart Bernina 430 with the embroidery module. I have two back to back sewing tables in my basement so I can have multiple projects going on simultaneously :) Mostly I quilt but I am starting to do clothes and home decor. Things that were difficult on the White are so much easier on the Bernina, I really like having them both available.

Like you I own multiple machines. I have 3 Singer treadles and my most prized antique is a hand crank
German machine my grandmother brought with her when she immigrated from Sweden. I currently own a Bernette serger, and Art Deco embroidery machine, a 1650, and a 440QE. I love them all, but do most of my work on the 440 QE.
Unknown said…
I had a 440QE and traded to a 580E and absolutely love it!! I also own a 1020 that sews like a dream. i am definitely brand loyal. Thanks so much for sharing your photos.

I am a very big Bernina fan - my first was the 830 Record. Now I own the 140QE, the 200E/730E and the 1100D serger. I am mooning over the 780E and the 830E, but that's another story. I sew in my basement as well, but do not have any natural light - wish I did! And of course, I could always use more space. Love what you have done with your space!

I have 3 Berninas-a 1230, 700 and the 830. Also am privileged to have the quilting frames. I'm sureI qualify to be a Bernina snob! One of my last projects was embroidering my grandson's name on his baseball glove. It looked really great on the band of the glove. I enjoy quilting and home decor and am working on a Stack 'n Whack quilt for my grandaughter's graduation gift which must be finished by 2015! I love all things Bernina!

Love your blog! I have an 820 and 830 Bernina of which I use at the same time by embroidering and quilting simultaniously. I never thought that would happen but they both sew so well. I love my machines. Great sewing space you have. Mine is very small also in the basement.

I sew mostly on my Bernina 830 (new one, not the original) and finally I love it! I had a couple of years of nightmares with it, but now we are great friends. I also have a 730, and an old Elna Supra .. my first machine.

Love your sewing room ... thanks for sharing!

I own 3 Berninas. Two are my workhorses- both of them 1130s. The third is the Bernina 75th Anniversary edition. Love them all, but had I known that what was in store I would have postponed the 75th edition for the newer 780. I am widowed now, with limited finances, so I will be content with the 3 Bernina's I currently own.

Congratulations on your award. I was sewing on a basic machine for many years and recently purchased my first Bernina - a 635LE. I love it. I've been simple quilting until I purchased this machine. Now I am learning free motion quilting, making embroidered cards, embroidered bags, hand bags, etc. I am loving this machine. Each project I work on, the stitching is beautiful. You are right, the stitching doesn't skip. I think a smaller Bernina would be great for everyday sewing and a serger would be nice to have.
Thank you for opportunity to be apart of the giveaway.

Hi I am amazed at your sewing studio it is wonderful...I have a very much smaller one but it is mine and that is what is important. I sew on 2 machines. I love my Janome Memory craft 6500 and I have a brother that has a wonderful stitch also. But I get so use to my Janome because it has an automatic thread cutter, knee lift, all kinds of stitches and feet that it spoils me from my other machines. I also have a 1935 Singer that has a locked case and all even a beautiful straight stitch and a white #1122 that stitches wonderfully. My dream has always been to have a Bernina but for right now I am a happy camper.

I have the Bernina 580 which I have named Hubert. He looks like a Hubert. My first sewing machine is the Singer 9410 that my father bought for me. I also have a Morse sewing machine which is little but very heavy. I love them all.

My husband bought me an 830LE for our anniversary last August. Our last child moved out of our home and I sunk into an empty nest depression. I miss having them at home. I miss being a Mom. He did such a sweet thing by turning our sons room into an awesome sewing room, totally redone so it wouldn't be just an empty time capsule of our past. It was a diificult time in my life, but his incredible efforts did get me excited about life again. The only problem is that I don't know how to sew and that machine is so amazing and I'm scared of it. I'm trying to get over my fear by reading blogs and looking at other's work and projects and trying to convince myself that I can do this. I do not sew and this is scarey and exciting both at the same time!

Currently enjoying a Bernina 780 but still have a 730. Throw lost of different projects at both. A lot of quilts, clothing, embroidery and craft stuff. The latest stuff I've been working with is laminated pet food bags, making tote, grocery, and other type bags out of them. Would anyone be interested in a rain coat? Beautiful sewing room that was shown. Granted every hard core sewer could always use more/bigger digs, but work with what you got. Spend more time sewing and less time organizing. Focus on what you got, not what you think you need!

I sew on a Bernina 230 that I bought about four years ago to replace my $100 Singer. The Singer, although reliable, was loud and clunky and could not FMQ at all. I love the Bernina! My only wish is for a larger throat space and more embroidery stitches. But I can live without them too. Thanks for a chance at your spectacular giveaway! I'd love to have some Bernina stuff to put around my sewing room.

I have a Bernina 200E/730 which I bought pre-enjoyed when I retired a couple years ago. It's a beast -- I love it! Thanks for the chance to win. You're so fortunate to have a dedicated sewing room :)

I love that your machine has a stitch regulator. How well does that work? I sew on a Juki 400 which I love :) Thanks for all the info on your machine, it looks awesome.

Thanks for sharing! I personally sew with a Janome 4120QDC and I love it but when the time comes to upgrade, i'll have to check out these machines with the giant bobbins...

I too sew with a Bernina. I have a Bernina 820 & a 153QE...both of which I love! I have a couple of older Vikings and a Singer (my husband uses the Viking 1100, it's a workhorse). I'm in a basement, but it's a walk-out so there is plenty of light from the windows and patio door. Could always use more though!

I got my first Bernina last year after using a Singer Golden Touch & Sew for 40 years! My 580 is such fun to use and I am discovering new things each time I use it. I love doing embroidery and just wish I had more time to sew! With four grandchildren I am never at a loss for ideas or things to sew.

After many years of reading about the Bernina and after being introduced to the Bernina 830Le at my dealer's promotion, I bit the bullet and bought it. I had sewn and still have a Babylock Ellisimo but I had ventured onto the Bernina website with all the online classes and projects and I was sold. I'm still learning to use my Bernina but it has been a fun learning curve.

I just got a new Bernina 780 two weeks ago! Also have a 1030, so it was time for an upgrade. Love Bernina sewing machines.

I'm sewing on a new Viking Ruby Deluxe. We're still getting to know each other ... it's a lot more high tech than my last machine.

I have a "few" berninas. I started n an 130 and do most sewing on 430 and embroidery on 200. You are right about a Bernina being a work horse.

I have 2 Berninas. A 1090 and a 170. They have NEVER been in the shop for anything other than their yearly check-ups. I would love to upgrade, but it's hard to justify when they still sew just as they did when they were brand new. Thank you for the opportunity to win some goodies!!
