Scared to Sew with Denim?

If you are new to using a sewing machine, making something with a thick denim fabric might seem impossible. Especially when a first try results in a broken needle, crooked seams, or skipped stitches.

Much of the success in sewing with a specialty fabric like thick denim is knowing what tools and techniques will make the job of sewing easier. And, I've just created a simple sewing project incorporating a handful of these basic denim sewing skills to help you get over your fear of sewing denim!

This free tote bag project includes basic tips and techniques needed to sew a pair of jeans: basic tools to help sew thick layers, tips for making perfect topstitching, and techniques to make perfect buttonholes in thick denim layers.

Find the detailed, three-part tutorial to make the Denim Sewing Skill Builder Tote at BERNINA's WeAllSew blog.

Don't forget to pick up a pack of heavy-duty sewing needles for this project. I suggest trying a size 90/14 Jeans needle, and if you experience a needle break or difficulty sewing through multiple layers, try moving up to a larger size 100/16 or 110/18 Sharp or Mictotex needle.

I hope you enjoy this FREE project! Happy sewing!

Hi @Anonymous, I'm so sorry you're not able to access the pattern from BERNINA's WeAllSew blog - you can always get in touch with the WeAllSew blog directly for help accessing the free pattern. The pocket pattern has diagonal sides and a pointed bottom, so the dimensions aren't an exact rectangle. The very top of the pocket pattern measures approximately 8" across, and the height of the pocket pattern at the longest point is approximately 7" tall.
