On my bookshelf: Sew Retro, A Stylish History of the Sewing Revolution

Have you seen this book? Seriously, have you seen Sew Retro: A Stylish History of the Sewing Revolution by Judi Ketteler? This is my new absolute most favorite sewing book!

What first got me excited about Sew Retro was the story of sewing and the great pieces of sewing nostalgia pictured throughout the book. From the Sewing Susan needlebook pictured right inside the first few pages,
Sewing Susan
to the countless little illustrations from vintage sewing books, vintage patterns, and the advertisements for the Singer Slant-o-matic sewing machine, I recognized much of the sewing ephemera and tools that I have in my very own collection. And when writing about sewing history, the author follows the thread of women's stitching through the decades, tracing domestic sewing from the birth of the home machine to modern times.

The book is full of retro sewing eye candy! Even the facts look good, like the timeline of sewing history across the bottom of some of the pages to give the reader a clear idea of what radical changes were taking place through decades.

25 vintage-inspired sewing projects are nested within the nostalgic pictures and history, grouped together and influenced by major time periods. Victorian inspired projects include everything a girl needs to start sewing; a super cute Sweet Sewing Basket, Charming Needlecase and a brightly colored Victorian Pincushion. Other projects include a 1920's fashion inspired Flapper Apron, a 1940's Tea Party Tablecloth and a very swank 1960's Mod Gathered Pillow.

As someone who has collected lots of antique and vintage sewing stuff and studied the history of sewing, this is a book that I could have written myself - except I'm not much good at words (which is why I mostly stick to the sewing). This book is great for beginners and established stitchers alike, not only because the projects cover a wide range of skills but because everyone can learn a thing or two from the women who sewed before us!

Inspiration: Postage Stamps

I rediscovered some stamps I had collected in a box while organizing over the weekend.
Wouldn't this stamp make an excellent quilt block? I think a quilt with "LOVE" blocks stitched up from all different colors would be awesome!

These stamps were in a pack that I  thrifted a few years ago. I really like the way some of these older stamps were printed - just check out all the lines that were used to create this portrait:

My dad collected stamps when I was in grade school, and it was something that we did together. Dad started me off with my very own stamp binder and a few tools of my own, and every so often we'd make a trip to the stamp store where I could pick out a pack of stamps for my collection. I was never into collecting stamps that were rare or valuable, it was all about the wonderful pictures on the stamps and the little stories they told.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with these stamps, and my old stamp collecting stuff is all packed away in storage. For now, I'm content just to look at them every once in awhile, you know, for inspiration!

Quilting: working on the new project

I recently joined up with the local chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild to make some new friends and find quilting support as I tackle my next quilt project. The Chicago Modern Quilt Guild gathered for a regular meeting over the weekend, just in time to give me a little boost of sewing and quilting inspiration!

My favorite part of the meetings is always the show-and-tell part, and you can visit the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild group on flickr if you'd like to see what the group is stitching up, too. It's so inspiring to see what everyone is making!

This month's meeting happpened to be Demo Day, where members have a chance to learn from each other.  Emily taught us hand embroidery basics, where I was SUPER EXCITED to learn how to embroider a French knot! For some reason, even when following written instructions, I just couldn't get the hang of it on my own. I also learned some tips on free-motion embroidery from Karen which I'll file away for use on my next quilting project.

And speaking of my next project, I finished drawing up a basic pattern and am waiting for the dyes to arrive so I can get started! Yay!

Oh, and on the subject of starting new projects, I just decided out of the blue that I really want to make a duct tape dress form. And I really don't know where I'm going to find time to fit THAT in! (This is exactly how I get myself in trouble...) So, anyone out there made one of these? And to you have a favorite tutorial or any great tips about making a custom dress forms?

A Winner and a long week!

And the winner of the fat quarter/pattern giveaway is Lisa B. from Remnant! Congrats Lisa and I hope you enjoy the pattern and the fabrics!

I came down with a nasty head cold this week, so other than working a bit I mostly vegged around the house. Yeah, it sucks. I don't even feel well enought to try and sew. I am in the process of ordering some fabric dyes and materials to start on my new project though, so I feel like I made at least a little progress.

Aaa...aaaaa...aaachooooo! And with that, I'm wishing all of you a great weekend as I sink back into the couch with some Alka Seltzer plus. G'night all!

Starting Over

I am starting a new project. One that I've been thinking about for years, and as part of my New Year's sewing resolution am determined to see to completion. I have been taking notes and writing down ideas for this project in my sketchbook for a long time.

And now I'm working on finalizing an overall pattern to follow. Although my instincts are telling me to start big, I am purposely keeping this project smaller in order to make it more realistic for me to finish, around 26" X 38".

I'm already having problems with my pattern; the lines aren't coming together just right, I'm so rusty with my sketching that I'm having to do a lot of erasing and re-drawing (and I even resorted to some correcting tape, ugh!). Which is starting to make a big mess. I might just trace the good parts and add in the rest on a new piece of paper.

As soon as my pattern is finished, I will start hand-dying fabrics for this project. I'm a little rusty on that, too, so I'm already checking back in my old dye notes to brush up on the process.

And wow, I am already completely filled with self-doubt over finishing this project. You know, like will it meet my expectations or will it end up being a complete failure? Sigh. Anyway, sharing my progress with all of you is kind of a double check for me, a way to share my progress, frustrations, and successes through to the end. Definitely stay tuned for this one...

Sewing to pay-it-forward

Yo-yo pins 01

These are little yo-yo flower gifts I'm making for Facebook friends. (Wow Erika, Facebook friends? Yikes, I am a total dork!) This is a "pay-it-forward" type of gift, an "I pledge to give away something handmade to the FIRST 5 friends to comment on this post!" kind of deal. I saw a few of my artsy friends post this on thier profiles, and though, "Oh wow, two things I totally love - handmaking stuff and giving gifts! I am totally in!"

Yo-yo flower pin

So, I've been stitching these up this week, enjoying the hand sewing on the couch after dinner while hubs watches the Netflix and the kiddo is asleep. The fabrics are all new, but the buttons are vintage.

Yo-yo flower pin

I really enjoy how hand sewing makes you slow down and appreciate everything about the sewing process...the thread, the needle, the fabric...

Yo-yo flower pin

I finished the back with a small circle of heavyweight interfacing and green felt, inserting a safety pin through small slits to make it a pin.

Pin back

The one funny thing is that I only got ONE comment so far under this post on my Facebook profile, and I still need 4 more friends to send these cute yo-yo pins to! Want to be my friend and join in on the Pay it forward 2011 pledge? You can find my Erika Sews Facebook profile by clicking right on the little badge over there in the right hand column ---> and pledge to start making and giving to your own Facebook friends!

A Nice Surprise!

Wow! TeaWithFrodo over at The Crafting Hobbit just awarded me the Stylish Blogger Award! What a really great suprise, and that just made my day!

One of the things I love about The Crafting Hobbit is how TeaWithFrodo blogs from the heart. She blogs about her love of crafting, sewing, and family. And check out her creative solution for organizing buttons, I wish I had thought of that!

Following the tradition of the Stylish Blogger Award, I need to first share 7 things about myself that you might not know. Hmmmm....

1) I lie about my age. Just a little. But still, I lie!
2) I love thrifting and antiquing, but have had to seriously cut it out since I am running out of room! My husband's favorite thing to say to me is, "Okay, so what one thing is leaving the house so you can bring that in?" Now I only thrift in my dreams.
3) I have tattoos.
4) When I was younger I had braces, and headgear, and it totally sucked. I really hope my offspring has a better dental impression than I did!
5) I have been TV free for 10 years. I stream lots of stuff online through the computer, but still, most of your pop-culture references are totally lost on me.
6) I learned to type on a manual typewriter in Jr. High school by a teacher who insisted on double-spaceing after periods. It's a really hard habit to break.
7) I always feel like there is still more to learn about sewing - more projects that I want to try, more techniques that I want to learn, and more people that can teach me a thing or two about sewing. And that's why I'm here!

And now I pass along the Stylish Blogger Award to some of my favorite bloggers! And the winners are:

Twelve Crafts Till Christmas
33 Stitches
doe-c-doe
mmmcrafts
HowAboutOrange

Go check out some of my very favorite blog reads, and have a great weekend!

A new skirt....and a winner!

eye_on_sparrow from Sewing with the sparrows is the winner of those fabulous green and gold Benartex fat quarters! Yay eye_on_sparrow! I hope you can make something fabulous from them.

Late last night I finished this skirt, another version of that two-layered A line skirt I made last month.

The other skirt is up as a class example, but this one is just for me! Love, love, love this Alexander Henry "los nuvios" fabric.

There's a story behind this skirt, and the skirt class that came out of it, but that will have to wait for another day. I'm right in the middle of meetings, and have a couple of other things to finish up while my toddler is napping (ahhhh, nap time!). Happy stitching!

Learning the Basics

Becoming an accomplished stitcher doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of practice, and half the battle is learning the ins and outs of using your sewing machine. From winding a bobbin to keeping the right thread tension, how you use your machine affects everything you sew.

Morse End Threading

It’s true that most sewing machine stores will gladly guide you through these first steps after purchasing a machine, but what happens if you are beginning to sew with a hand-me-down? Or what if you’ve purchased your first sewing machine online or from a big-box store? What then?
Morse

Well I’ll tell you what, bring that machine on in to the Sewing Machine Basics class and learn with me! Become well versed in sewing machine terms like feed dogs, presser foot, and throat plate. Learn the right way to wind and insert a bobbin, and discover the true meaning of thread tension. Stitch up your own pillowcase while discovering the details of straight and zig-zag stitching. And, finally, transform into a technician to tune-up your machine and keep it purring like a kitten. Once you have a handle on the basics you can tackle any simple sewing project!

Morse Precision Sewing Machine

This class is being offered at the big beautiful classroom in Fabrics Etc. 2 located in Bensenville, near the corner of York and Grand. Class meets on Saturday February the 5th from 1-4 PM at the very affordable cost of $27.00. Register for class directly with Fabrics Etc. 2.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Yes, I can see the end of my sewing room clean-out project! YES!

Oh, but first, a winner! Leila at Three Dresses Project is getting a few new pretty Benartex fat quarters, yay!

So today I'm hanging some brand spankin' new curtains in the sewing studio. I'm trying plain white this time and hope that the light will diffuse through the fabric but still stay bright in the room. No, I'm not spending time sewing them from scratch, these are from Target. But I do have to hem the curtains over the sewing table since it is attached to the wall.

Hemming up new curtains

Dang those new windows are clear and bright! Hey, did I ever tell you guys about the massive sew-fail yo-yo bag I made last year? No? Oh, well that's probably for the best. I completely covered a tote-bag with brightly colored yo-yo's, which in itself is a good idea, but due to the different, brightly colored fabrics I chose, the result kind of looked like I killed a clown to make it. Yeah, it was so bad that I erased all of the photographic evidence from my computer. Anyway, I ended up cutting off all the yo-yo's from the bag to use on something else.

After I finished hanging the curtains on the other window yesterday, I decided the yo-yo's would add the perfect touch.

New curtains with yo-yo's

I sewed the yo-yo's across the top of the curtains with some vintage buttons, and added a yo-yo to the tie-backs, too.

What do you think? My hubs hates it, which makes me think it must look freakin' awesome because he has awful taste.

This is all I have left to organize (or get rid) of in the sewing room, and I'll tackle this last little mess over the weekend. Sounds like fun, huh? Yes, yes it does, and I cannot WAIT to see what this room lookes like when it is finally back in order!

From Trash to Treasure

I spent most of 2010 slowly cleaning out and organizing my hoard collection of sewing supplies. The enormous amount of sewing stuff I had collected made me feel stifled - almost like I was drowning - and I always felt like I should be using all of this stuff. I should be sewing more with these patterns, I should be using more of this fabric, I should be sewing from these patterns, I should, I should, I should!

Yeah. And know what? Feeling anxious and dismayed about sewing really sucked. Big time. In fact, I actually lost my sewing mojo.

I slowly came to the conclusion that I won't ever be able to sew with all the stuff in that enormous collected pile of sewing crap. Instead, I started to think that it would be better to concentrate on sewing a few things well with a few charished patterns and a bit of wonderful fabric. And that's when I started to let go (and get back into my sewing groove). Within the last year I donated, gifted or sold 7 sewing machines, 950ish vintage dress patterns, 3 or 4 garbage bags of fabrics, a shopping bag full of fat quarters, and a huge pile of books. Phew!

Still, I find that as I re-organize the sewing room post-construction, there are a few more things to let go of. Like this here stack o' fat quarters that I don't fancy and won't use:

So, since I've already donated and gifted so much already, I've decided the best thing to do to let go of these fabrics is to pass them along to you, my blogging friends!

I've wrapped them up in packets of 5 (mostly) color coordinated fat quarters. I'm not clever enough to come up with an exciting and creative contest, so I'm going to start posting a leave-a-comment-random-drawing type of giveaway. Starting tomorrow. So come on back, and I hope you will find a great use for these fabrics and turn my trash into your treasure!

The Aftermath

The new windows are in, yay! And they are so big, bright and clear! I never realized how dingy and hazy the old windows were. I think this calls for new window treatments!

Of course this also means that it's time to cut the chaos and get this room back in order so I can work. The carpenters are still banging away on the new siding, but have finished the outside walls of the sewing studio, so I can safely hang all the crap back up on the walls.

I have a brand new desk (errr, I will when I finish putting it together, that is) in my office area to help organize my office mess. I had my eye on a wide desk with just two drawers underneath, and my hubs talked me into a different desk with the same surface work area but many, many more drawers.

And I'm actually working away from the kitchen table this morning because there isn't any space at all to plug my laptop in the sewing studio yet! I plan on getting back to the organizing (and desk construction) after working a bit and doing some house chores. I can't wait to get things organized and see how much space I can save!

I've also been thinking and pondering on some New Year's resolutions. Hmmmmmm. Are you declaring any resolutions for the New Year? Setting any sewing/quilting goals for yourself? Making any big changes?
