Like most of you, we're celebrating a very happy Thanksgiving with friends and family this year. But this year I'm adding a new tradition in the mix, giving a little back to someone who is not as fortunate as me by celebrating National Tie One On Day.
My "Tie One On Day" apron has a nice little story behind it. This apron came to me in a box of vintage fabrics that a friend was de-stashing, some of which came to her from other family members. The pieces to this apron had been already cut out and the original maker hand embroidered a pretty little design along the bottom hemline, but it was never finished.
So, probably a few decades after the original maker had cut and embroidered this fabric, the apron has finally come together! In the tradition of Tie One On Day, I need to find someone who could use a litte uplifting on Thanksgiving day to pass this apron along to, with a note or prayer in the pocket and even possibly some baked goodies. Fortunately for me, I cannot think of one family member, friend or neighbor who hasn't been very blessed this year and would be in need of a Tie One On pick-me-up. I've decided to give my donation to a local organization that can pass it along to someone in need right in my own neighborhood.
This Thanksgiving I invite you to also start a new tradition of giving back. Even if sewing or aprons isn't your thing, make a resolution to personally give a little back to some one in need each year as part of your Thanksgiving tradition. This could be a family member, friend or neighbor that could use an encouraging word, a nice personal note, or maybe even a little home baking. If you don't know someone personally, I urge you to also find an organization in your neighborhood that helps those that are less fortunate; a church with a food pantry, a meals on wheels program that help elderly folks with no one else to cook for them, or an organization that feeds the hungry on Thanksgiving day.
And from all of us - me, the Mister and our little Sews-it-all jr., we wish you all a very thankful and blessed Thanksgiving holiday!

What I Learned at Quilt Camp
Last weekend I went to my first ever quilting retreat (otherwise know as "Quilt Camp") with the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild. It was just about the most awesomest sewing related fun time I've ever had! Brilliant!
I learned so much about my fellow group members - mostly that we all have much more in common that quilting and sewing, and that even while we were all concentrating on projects we shared lots of stories and a few laughs!
I did manage to pick up lots of sewing tips, tricks, and quilting lessons along the way, some of which I will share later when my head stops spinning from the sheer sewing information overload.
But I will share a few important things that I learned about QUILTERS:
But I will share a few important things that I learned about QUILTERS:
1. Quilt Smarts: Quilters are smart. I saw all kinds of mathematical equations going on with seams, bindings, block design, cutting, and piecing. And the geometry involved is amazing! Seriously, there were some hardcore adding and subtracting going on, and most quilters were using their heads - even including fractions. Who knew quilters were really math nerds?
2. Quilt Theorists: Quilters are serious about color. In fact, some of these women have a better handle on Color Theory than many studied artists I know! I have a deep respect for those who have such a natural handle on colors and how they react with each other, and am extremely grateful to learn what I can from them. Because after all, color rocks!
3. Quilt Talk: Quilters like to talk! In fact, when they're not talking to each other, they're talking to themselves! In all seriousness, there is a lot of multi-tasking going on in quilting. You know, stitching and pulling out pins at the same time, remembering which way the blocks are supposed to be stitched together, that kind of stuff. Talking it out can really help you stay on track, and let me just say that there was a lot of this going on last weekend!

4. Quilt Generously: Quilters are generous in spirit. I was happy to see many quilters working on charity quilts, and amazed at the time, effort, and love that went into these projects. And these were even above and beyond the charity projects we all quilted together as a group! Quilters also are generous with each other, sharing tools, books, tips, tricks, and techniques between each other. It's a wonderful thing to be surrounded by so much generosity!
5. Quilt Love: Quilters really do have a serious passion for quilting! And you know what? It's contagious, and I think I've caught the quilting bug! And I can't wait for the next quilting retreat!

Midwestern Landscape Project Finish!
I was FINALLY able to finish this project last weekend at the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild fall quilting retreat!
The only thing left to do is to make a hanging sleeve for the back, which I will tackle next week.
I am happy with the final result, but it took a lot longer than I thought it would to finish it up. Not sure if I'd want to create another project like this that included so much hand sewing!
I still have to find time to share with you my awesome weekend at "quilt camp" with my friends at the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild, and I hope to get caught up with downloading photos this weekend - I have lots to share!

You Say It's Your Birthday...
Happy birthday to my sweet baby - who's not so much of a baby anymore. As always, even on her birthday, she is very serious!
Not to mention curios, too.

Gone Quilting!
My bags are packed and I'm just about to hit the road to join this weekend's Chicago Modern Quilt Guild quilting retreat! Although there is internet access available at the retreat, I've made the decision not to bring my laptop so I can fully concentrate on my quilting projects. So, that means I'll have to catch up with all of you next week!
But while I'm gone, visit WeAllSew.com where I'm guest blogging today about some great sewing opportunities to serve our veterans in observance of Veteran's Day. And don't forget to say "Thank you" to a veteran!
Have a great weekend all!

I'm Going Quilting!
I'm getting ready to pack my bags to go on my first ever quilt retreat with the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild! Since I'm a total quilt retreat novice, I've posted over at http://www.weallsew.com/ today asking everyone to give me a little advice on what to bring, what not to bring, and how to pack. Hop on over to my post there if you'd like to give me some help!
I am also working on getting everything together for the projects coming with me to the retreat.
First, I am determined to finish using the rest of the vintage pieced fabric strips that I found earlier this year. I had an idea for taking the squares apart to make a more intricate design, but just decided about two hours ago that idea would take way too long. I just want to finish this one up, so I am going to leave the strips as-is and add a few thinner strips of solid colors in between each strip. I should have this one finished for sure!
I also have a bundle of fat-quartered Dick and Jane fabrics that I bought years ago at Quilt Festival. I think it would be perfect paired with a few solid colors using Amy Butler's Sexy Hexy Love Quilt! Can't wait to lay out the fabrics to see the possibilities with this pattern! I probably won't finish this one, but if I can get it all planned and cut I will be happy.
Oh yeah, and I do plan on finishing up this art quilt that I started at the beginning of this year, too! Just a few more hand-sewn applique thingies and binding, and this project will be done. Phew!
Okay, so now I just have to make sure to pack everything I need for these projects - you know, in between the working from home and mommying and house-wifery going on here! Oh yeah, and it's also POTTY TRAINING TIME at our house, which basically means I spend most of the day sitting in the bathroom with my tot just waiting for the inevitable...and waiting... and waiting.....
